Let’s Talk About World Speech Day
There are moments in the year that invite us to pause, reflect, and reconnect with what matters.
For me, World Speech Day is one of those moments.
As the Canadian Ambassador for World Speech Day, this global celebration of voice has become deeply personal. Every year, I’m reminded that at its core, this day is about something simple but powerful:
Everyone deserves to be heard.
And this year, on Sunday, March 15, we’re doing something a little different.
We’re hosting a Speaker Showcase that shifts the focus away from titles, expertise, and polished keynote messages — and toward something much deeper.
The people behind the voices.
In my work as a media consultant and speaker’s bureau founder, I spend a lot of time helping leaders and experts show up confidently in public spaces — on stages, in interviews, and in conversations that shape culture. I see the polished version of people every day. The keynote version. The panel version. The professional bio version.
But I also know something else.
The moments that truly move audiences don’t come from perfectly crafted messages. They come from honesty. From vulnerability. From the stories that don’t always make it into the highlight reel.
The obstacle that almost made you quit.
The failure that taught you resilience.
The moment you realized your voice actually mattered.
And right now, in a world that feels noisy, divided, and uncertain, those stories matter more than ever.
This year’s showcase is intentionally designed to be reflective, human, and connective. The featured speakers are Hadriana Leo, Colleen James, Dr. Leonie Brown, Lavinia Latham, Divine Muzia, Andrea Sampson and Lee-Anne Lyon-Bartley.
Rather than focusing on a specific industry or topic, we are inviting speakers to share short, personal talks that explore:
Who you are beyond your professional title
The challenges you’ve faced and how you navigated them
Meaningful experiences that shaped your journey
The parts of your story audiences may not yet know
This is about authenticity.
It’s about resilience.
It’s about connection.
Because when audiences understand the lived experiences that inform your work, they connect with you in a completely different way.
And after decades in media, I can tell you: connection is everything.
One of the things I love most about World Speech Day is that it happens all over the world. From classrooms to boardrooms, from community centres to international forums, people gather to celebrate the power of speech to create understanding, leadership, and change.
Here in Canada, we’ve been building something special over the past few years. Each event has reminded me that when we create intentional spaces for people to speak and be heard, something shifts — in confidence, in community, and in possibility.
This year’s showcase is about deepening that impact.
Public speaking is often seen as performance. But at its best, it’s about presence. It’s about giving language to experiences people are struggling to articulate.
For the speakers, this event is an opportunity to:
Share their story in a more human and relatable way
Build deeper trust and emotional connection
Reconnect with their purpose
Expand the impact of their work beyond expertise
For audiences, it’s a chance to see speakers not as polished brands, but as real people.
The truth is, the world doesn’t need more perfect. It needs more real.
We are intentionally creating an environment that feels safe, warm, and supportive. This is not a high-pressure keynote stage. It’s a space where honesty is welcomed and vulnerability is celebrated.
World Speech Day has always aligned with the mission of FKB Media and Book A Speaker: to amplify diverse voices, create meaningful platforms, and help people step into their confidence.
This year’s Speaker Showcase is another step in that journey. Check it out on our YouTube page on Sunday March 15th. Now, that’s what I’m talking about!
