Questions About Media...Ask Me Anything!

One part of my mission statement is to make media accessible to small and media businesses. I know for many, getting coverage is a bit of a mystery. And as much as I post my media releases, offer downloadable worksheets (pw: YOUTUBE) and respond to inquiries on my website, fkbmedia.com, I still get asked lots of questions when I tell people what I do. So, I thought it would be a great topic for my next YOUTUBE video.

But first, allow me to re-introduce myself.

I started my television career as a writer on Breakfast Television and then moved on to write for CityNews at 6 and 11 - for legendary anchors Gord Martineau and the late great Mark Daley. After a few years working on my craft (I also wrote for music publications Word Magazine and Words & Music), I became a producer, a position that I continued in for the next 20 years or so. I produced CityNews at 6, 11, CityOnline, CP24, Toronto 1, Canada AM, Your Morning and CTV News Channel. In that time, I also helped launch CP24 and Toronto 1. I wrote, reported and produced for BET News. I was the president of the Canadian Association of Black Journalists and am currently the Foundation Vice-Chair of Women in Film and Television - Toronto. I left the newsroom in 2018 to run my own business - FKB Media Solutions - a media consulting company that assists small and media businesses, enterpreneurs and professionials in accessing media and building their brand. Some of the services that we offer include public relations, media strategy, branding, and building your profile as an expert.

Over the past six years I have media trained a number of professionals and guided them into becoming regular experts on Cityline, Breakfast Television, CP24 Breakfast and other media platforms. Producers, reporters and editors have become familiar with these unfamiliar faces and voices to them. I have pitched and produced segments that have elevated brands, personalities, community issues, policies and cultural events. Once my clients understood what was required to receive coverage, we were able to get them the media exposure they were seeking. It has been very fulfilling to see this happening and to be a part of making it happen. Make sure to check out the Find An Expert page and click on the individual links to see some of the media we have acquired for our clients.

Now back to the question(s) at hand….from you hopefully. With my 25+ years of journalism experience, plus my last six years of running my media consulting company, I think I have a pretty good grasp of the media landscape. So send your questions to media@fkbmedia.com or drop it in the comments of my latest IG video asking for questions.

And I’ll see you on YouTube with the answers!
